Everything you need to know

Learn how to use every feature of MagicShot โ€” from installation to exporting polished SOPs and documentation.

๐Ÿงฉ Installation

MagicShot is a Chrome browser extension available on the Chrome Web Store. Installation takes under 60 seconds.

  1. Visit the Chrome Web Store
  2. Click "Add to Chrome"
Click the blue "Add to Chrome" button, then confirm by clicking "Add extension" in the popup.
  3. Pin MagicShot to your toolbar
Click the puzzle-piece icon (Extensions) in your Chrome toolbar, find MagicShot, and click the pin icon so it's always visible.
  4. Open any webpage and click the MagicShot icon
Navigate to any page you want to document, then click the โœจ MagicShot icon. The side panel opens on the right.
๐Ÿ’ก

MagicShot works as a side panel โ€” it opens on the right side of your browser without covering the page, so you can see both simultaneously.

โš™๏ธ First-time Setup

Before your first capture, you need to enter your email address in the Settings section of the extension.

Setting up your email

  1. Open the MagicShot side panel
Click the โœจ icon in your Chrome toolbar on any page.
  2. Scroll to "Settings" at the bottom
Find the Settings section at the bottom of the side panel.
  3. Enter your email address
Type your email โ€” this identifies your account and links your documents and credits to you.
  4. Click Save
Your settings are saved locally in Chrome. You only need to do this once.
โš ๏ธ

Your email is required to save documents to the cloud and track your export credits. Captures still work without an email, but documents won't be saved to your dashboard.

๐Ÿ“ธ Capturing Screenshots

Capturing is completely free and unlimited. Every capture instantly sends the screenshot to the AI for analysis.

How to capture

  1. Navigate to the page you want to document
Open the webpage, screen, or UI you want to capture.
  2. Choose your document type
In the side panel, select the type of documentation you want: SOP, Explanation, Guide, or Bug Report.
  3. Click "Add Screenshot to Session"
MagicShot captures the visible area of your current tab and sends it to the AI. Results appear in 5โ€“10 seconds.
  4. Repeat for multi-step workflows
Navigate to the next step in your workflow and capture again. All screenshots in a session are combined into one document.
๐Ÿ’ก

For the best results, capture one step at a time. Scroll to show all relevant UI elements before capturing.

๐Ÿ“„ Document Types

MagicShot supports four types of AI-generated documentation. Choose the type before you capture.

๐Ÿ“‹
SOP
Standard Operating Procedures with numbered steps, clear instructions, and professional formatting. Ideal for internal processes.
๐Ÿ’ก
Explanation
A plain-English description of what the screen shows, what each element does, and how they work together.
๐Ÿ“–
Step-by-Step Guide
User-facing how-to instructions. Great for onboarding docs, help center articles, and product tutorials.
๐Ÿ›
Bug Report
Structured QA report with severity, affected elements, expected vs. actual behavior, and steps to reproduce.
๐Ÿ’ก

You can mix document types within a session โ€” but for best results, stick to one type per session export.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Sessions

A session is a collection of screenshots that get combined into one exported document. This lets you document multi-step workflows from multiple pages.

Managing your session

  • Add screenshots โ€” Click "Add Screenshot to Session" on each page/step in your workflow.
  • Reorder screenshots โ€” Use the up/down arrows in the side panel to reorder screenshots before exporting.
  • Remove screenshots โ€” Click the โœ• on any screenshot to remove it from the session.
  • Clear session โ€” Click "Clear Session" to start fresh. This removes all screenshots from the current session.
โš ๏ธ

Sessions are stored in your browser. Closing the extension or clearing browser data will clear your current session. Export your document before closing Chrome.

๐Ÿ“ฅ Exporting Documents

Exporting converts your session into a polished PDF or Word document (.docx). Each screenshot in your export costs 1 credit.

How to export

  1. Make sure you have credits
Check your credit balance in the top-right of the side panel. You need 1 credit per screenshot in the session.
  2. Click "Export as PDF" or "Export as DOCX"
Choose your preferred format. The document is generated on our server with full-width screenshots and formatted AI text.
  3. Save the file
Your browser will prompt you to save the file. The document is ready to share immediately.

Export formats

  • PDF โ€” Full-width screenshots in 16:9 ratio with formatted text. Best for sharing and printing.
  • DOCX (Word) โ€” Editable document with embedded screenshots (620ร—349 px) and AI text. Best for editing and customizing.

The MagicShot web dashboard lets you view, manage, and re-download all your saved documents from any browser.

  1. Click "Open Dashboard" in the extension
In the side panel, click the "Open Dashboard" button. A secure login link is sent to your registered email.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

Is MagicShot really free?
Yes. Capturing screenshots and generating AI documentation is completely free and unlimited. You only need credits to export documents as PDF or DOCX files. 1 credit = 1 screenshot exported.
Does MagicShot capture my browsing history?
No. MagicShot only captures the visible area of your current browser tab when you explicitly click the capture button. It does not monitor background tabs, track URLs you visit, or collect any browsing history.
What AI model powers MagicShot?
MagicShot uses OpenAI's GPT-4o Mini with Vision โ€” a fast, cost-efficient, and highly capable model that understands screenshots and complex user interfaces.
Are my screenshots stored?
Screenshots are sent to our server for AI processing and then saved to your account if you are signed in with an email. You can delete any document from your dashboard at any time. We do not share your screenshots with third parties except OpenAI for AI processing.
Can I use MagicShot on any website?
Yes โ€” MagicShot works on any webpage in Chrome. Note: Chrome restricts extensions from capturing certain browser system pages like the Chrome Web Store, new tab pages, and settings pages.
Do my credits expire?
Credits from the one-time Credit Pack ($2.49) never expire. Credits from the Monthly Plan ($2.99/mo) carry over month-to-month and do not expire as long as your subscription is active.
What's the difference between PDF and DOCX export?
PDF exports are best for sharing and printing โ€” they feature full-width screenshots and formatted AI text. DOCX (Word) exports are editable and best when you need to customize or add to the documentation after export.
The extension isn't working. What should I do?
First, make sure you've entered your email in the Settings section of the side panel. If issues persist, try removing and re-adding the extension from the Chrome Web Store, then re-enter your settings. Contact support if the problem continues.
